➤ Education & Duties Required for Various Categories
➤Art Handling Specialist
⧫Role Purpose: Responsible in supervising the art
handlers and facilitating best movement conditions for Orientalist Museum
collections on site, off site and transit locations so as to facilitate
physical access to the collections for both internal and external users.
⧫Duties & Responsibilities:
- Support
head of section in development and implementation of sections’ goals and
objectives
- Manage the physical requirements of Orientalist Museum Collections, ensuring they are appropriately housed, stored and handled.
- Manage the art-handlers’ team and the mount-making projects
- Collaborate
with the Head of Collection Care Unit and Collections Registrar on storage
reorganisation projects
- Supervise,
train and deploy project staff as necessary on collection related work
- Comply
with relevant Orientalist Museum policies and procedures, relevant
legislation and regulations, industry standards and ethics
- Coordinate
elements of and/or manage projects which typically relate to issues of
storage, preventive conservation and space metrics, including taking
primary responsibility for the coordination of the Collections Emergency
Response Plan within the framework of the Orientalist Museum’s Collections
plans and QM Crisis Response plans
⧫Qualifications/Requirements:
- Technical
or vocational qualification in Carpentry, Metalwork or crafts and/or BA in
Art, Art History or relevant field along with knowledge of Operations and
Logistics
- At
least 8 years of experience in a similar position; Experience in the
development and implementation of policies and procedures for the
management of a diverse cultural collection
- Knowledge,
understanding and experience of both the principles of collection
management practice and physical management of museum, library, art and
archival materials
- Knowledge
and understanding of computer-based collection management systems
- Collections
Management standards, policies and procedures
- Security
Protocols
- Shipment
procedures of art works
- Ability
to supervise and train staff and volunteers, and to monitor budgets
- Extensive
knowledge of national and international principles, practices, standards
and ethics relating to the documentation and management of cultural
collections
- Language
Skills: Fluency in English, Arabic desirable
- Proficiency
in computer skills, Microsoft Office

➤Curator of Sculpture & Decorative Arts
⧫Role Purpose: The curator works within the
curatorial group, reporting to the Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs.
Curator provides the expertise on the Museum’s collections, required to deliver
the Museum’s programmes. Curator works in close collaboration with the
Education Department in the development and delivery of public and staff
programmes. The Curator of Sculpture and Decorative arts is responsible for the
Orientalist Museum’s collections of Sculpture and Decorative arts (not fashion
and textiles), and in particular, cataloguing, research and publications,
contributing to display and exhibition development, development of the content
of the website, and teaching at all levels. Curators are expected to deal with
questions relating to the collections from all areas within the Museum and
academic and public enquiries outside
⧫Duties & Responsibilities:
- Conceptualizes
and executes all aspects of project development and implementation at the
highest professional standards, including research, writing,
presentations, budgeting, and coordination with project stakeholders
- Makes
acquisition recommendations for objects or collections of interest to top
management
- Writes
scopes for exhibition vendors and
services
- Conducts
tours to explain key exhibition themes to internal stakeholder
departments
- Reviews
project and consultancy contracts with legal team
- Develops
museums and exhibition interpretation and public programs with education
team
- Writes
essays for exhibition catalogues, scholarly articles for internal and
external publications
- Presents
at conferences and networks with external museums and curators
- Represents
the museum in all activities in public domain in line with museum vision
and mission
⧫Qualifications/Requirements:
- MA
or PhD in Art History or Design history.
- Minimum
of 10-12 years, 5 -6 years of experience in the specialized field
- Excellent
language skills in English; Excellent language skills in Arabic highly
preferred.
- Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills
- Proficiency
in computer skills and Microsoft Office
- Proof
of independent research, publications and articles with respected journals
and institutions
- Proof
of academic papers presented at international conferences
- Proof
of exhibition development and delivery as sole curator
➤Paintings Conservator
⧫Role Purpose: The Conservator will be expected to carry
out conservation treatment on the Museum’s Paintings collections, care for
relevant collections, ensuring their physical safety- stability, keeping
detailed records of the works carried out along with communicating the
Paintings Conservator activities with his/ her colleagues and interest groups.
⧫Duties & Responsibilities:
- Visits
Academics and Scholars
- Ensures
adherence to policies and procedures
- Works
as part of the Collections section and provides accurate information to
the Orientalist Museum staff
- Carries
out conservation treatments on the Museum’s Paintings collections, cares
for relevant collections, ensuring their physical safety-stability, keeping
detailed records of the works carried out
- Communicates
the Paintings conservation activities with his/ her colleagues and
interest groups
- Assists
with day to day running of the laboratory (including procuring materials
and equipment)
- Ensures
familiarity with condition surveys with the ability to undertake same
- Ensures
having a good knowledge of monitoring and controlling the environment in
which collections are stored or displayed to prevent deterioration
- Liaises
with museum curators, registrars and other colleagues
- Assists
with setting up exhibitions
- Applies
preventive conservation principles and care of collections with interest
into Paintings
- Packs
objects for transport and accompanying objects in transit to other
locations if required
- Takes
supervisory roles occasionally (i.e. interns, volunteers and newer staff
members)
- Publishes
his/her work, under the Orientalist Museum policies and procedures
- Any
other activity as described by the Head for Conservation
